"Indescribable"

To honor Black History Month, let’s turn to “Indescribable,” a tribute to John Lewis, the late Georgia congressman and civil rights icon. Atlanta native Elizabeth Stockton, a longtime painter, gifted the piece to the Center last year.
The nearly 5-foot-tall panel contrasts the obstacles and injustices Lewis faced with his bravery and accomplishments. Strident marks of oil form the backdrop to a 1961 mugshot. Little stars, representing his shining light, adorn his determined eyes. His Presidential Medal of Freedom overlays his booking board. On his jacket are lines from his posthumous essay, published in The New York Times, including “Walk with the wind, brothers and sisters, and let the spirit of peace and the power of everlasting love be your guide.”
The inscription “RED, WHITE and beaten black & BLUE” speaks to Lewis’ patriotism despite all he endured.
“He was a giant of a man,” said Stockton, who reserves similar praise for President Jimmy Carter. Knowing the painting now hangs prominently in The Carter Center, she said, “is my proudest moment as an artist.”
