These paintings are built by layering words or phrases. The oil is applied in my block or script handwriting, or some variation of it. There is no hierarchy or focal point, just repetition and rhythm. The overlapping words may beg deciphering, but cryptography is not the goal. The words make a statement beyond their literal meaning to conjure a new interpretation. I typically use text that is poignant, inspiring, or thought provoking.
